FireStash Keychain Lighter for Your Everyday Carry Kit

ThinkGeek is offering a small, waterproof lighter that would make a great addition to your everyday carry kit.  This little lighter is only 1.8″ long X 0.6″ in diameter, and it’s made of a dark chrome-plated zinc alloy.  It uses standard lighter fuel and has a wheel striker, like those used in Zippo lighters.  It [...]

Charting the upgrade path from DOS 5.0 to Windows 7 (video)

Charting the upgrade path from DOS 5.0 to Windows 7 (video)
If you're old enough to remember tweaking your Autoexec.bat and tackling IRQ conflicts, days when launching Windows required typing "win" at a command prompt, prepare for a blast of nostalgia. YouTuber Andrew Tait (aka "TheRasteri") took a freshly minted VMWare instance and spent what looks to be a full day running through every version of Windows starting with DOS 5.0 and Windows 1.0, which was basically just Explorer paired with one heck of a crummy text editor. From there he dutifully leads us on a crazy upgrade path all the way up to modern times, charting interesting things like how long a version of Doom installed in DOS ran (failed in Windows 2000, but worked again in Windows XP) and when color settings made in Windows 2.0 were finally overwritten (also in 2000). It's 10 minutes in length and is probably the most interesting video you won't watch today.

High-Def Webcam from Microsoft

Microsoft has introduced the LifeCam HD-3000, a high-def webcam optimized for use with Windows Live.  The 720p sensor records high-def video at 30 fps in 16:9 widescreen.  The camera uses TrueColor technology for bright, clear pictures, and the noise-reducing microphone means the sound is as good as the video.  Although it is optimized for use [...]

Battleheart for iPad [Video]

For your average gamer (me!), RPGs can be daunting. It always seems like some confusing soup of powers and power-ups, like everything's in some mystifying and dorky language that I just don't speak. Battleheart, an adorable and addictive RPG, is more my speed. And it might be the perfect iPad game. More »

Our Take: Apple?s iPad 2 Announcement

This morning's Apple press event has come and gone, and as you likely have noticed, we covered just about every aspect of it. The iPad 2 itself, the new features and apps coming with iOS 4.3, the 100m and 15m iPhone and iPad sales numbers, even the new device's funky magnetic case. That said, the announcement was conspicuous for its lack of truly major announcements. Rumors have been flying left and right about potential new features, but virtually none actually manifested. Did our little online echo chamber make us expect too much, or did Apple, in the face of powerful alternative devices like the Xoom, deliver too little? Here are our opinions on the announcement and what's yet to come.

Olympus Super-Zoom Shoots Movies and Stills Simultaneously

Olympus’ new SZ-30MR is pitched as a “super-zoom” camera, and with its 24x optical zoom (25-600mm equivalent) it certainly qualifies. But despite fitting such a big lens into a small body, the zoom is not the most interesting part of the camera. That award goes to the “Multi-Recording” function. With the SZ-30MR, you can capture two [...]

Flash Player 10.2 with Stage Video hardware acceleration out of beta

flash 10.2
Flash Player 10.2 is finally out of beta!

We've covered this upgrade before, and after three months of beta testing, Adobe feels ready to roll this one out as an official update.

The key features that make Flash 10.2 a worthwhile upgrade are:

  • Proper full-screen support for multi-monitor systems: At long last, users with more than one monitor would be able to play a full-screen video on one monitor while working with another monitor! Hurrah! This long-overdue feature alone is worth the upgrade.
  • Stage Video: Adobe's new API for high-performance video playback across multiple platforms. In simple terms, it makes HD video fast and easy on your computer. The only snag is that developers will have to build in support for it - it's not just a client-side change. Adobe says YouTube, Vimeo, and Brightcove are already hard at work adding support.
  • Font smoothing: Flash player isn't all about video, after all. This improvement adds ClearType-like font smoothing.
  • Hardware acceleration: Last but not least, Flash 10.2 supports IE 9's hardware acceleration capabilities ("GPU rendering").
All in all, Flash 10.2 sounds like a worthy upgrade. Click here for the download page, and if you're using Chrome, be sure to disable the built-in Flash plug-in to reap the benefits unless you're on the updated Dev channel.

Hands-On With The iPad 2! (Update: Now With Video!)

After less than a year on the market, the iPad has already been made obsolete by its own creator with today's introduction of the iPad 2 ? or has it? Just how big of a jump is it from the first round to the second? How does the new iPad feel in the hand? Is Photo Booth on the iPad going to be as much fun for stoned college kids on the iPad as it is on OS X? We spent a bit of time with the iPad 2 today following Apple's announcement ? join as after the jump as we attempt to answer all these questions and more!

inPulse Bluetooth smartwatch gets Facebook Places check-in app for Android (video)

Ever since Allerta released an SDK for its well-hyped inPulse smartwatch, it was only a matter of time before we start seeing more practical applications that take this Bluetooth peripheral beyond the BlackBerry ecosystem. For instance, the latest example comes from the inPulse's very own Lead Designer Eric Migicovsky, who happens to be a fan of Facebook Places and possibly an Android convert. Rather than having to pull out his Nexus One for every check-in, Migicovsky can now use his simple app on his inPulse to grab a list of nearby locations off the phone, and then check in with just a click of a button. Pretty neat, eh? For those interested, you can grab the project code off inPulse's website and get programming.
