Talk to the Hand with the Earzee Bluetooth Wristband

If you’ve tried Bluetooth headsets and speaker phones before and didn’t find them to your liking, I have another option to try for hands free calls. It’s the Earzee Bluetooth Wristband from MobileFun. This wristband pairs with your phone and vibrates when it detects a call. You can then pull the earphone speaker between your [...]

Samsung wants to sell 10 million 3D TVs this year, LG plans on 5 million

Here's one way to solve a chicken-and-egg dilemma: crank out 15 million chickens. That's seem to be the plan for Samsung and LG, anyway -- Samsung plans to sell 10 million 3D TVs this year, up five times from the two million it sold last year, while LG plans to sell some 5 million. Now, it's unclear whether this increase in sales will come as a result of consumer demand for 3D or simply because almost all new TVs will be 3D-capable, but we're hoping that pesky 3D content problem will get a lot better once more people can actually view it -- assuming anyone actually wants to wear the glasses, that is.

This Is Business, Not Personal.

In Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 film The Godfather, there's a scene between Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and Sonny Corleone (James Caan) that plays out like this:
Tom: Your father wouldn't want to hear this, Sonny. This is business not personal. Sonny: They shoot my father and it's business, my ass! Tom: Even shooting your father was business not personal, Sonny!
Events the past few days in the tech ecosystem have reminded me of this scene. As we've all heard by now, yesterday, Twitter made what seemed to be a quick and drastic decision to block a number of popular Twitter third-party clients, namely, UberTwitter and Twidroyd. Both of those, of course, are owned and operated by UberMedia, a company which is quickly buying up a significant part of the Twitter ecosystem ? presumably to figure out a way to monetize it.

New York Times: Apple Is Not Making a Smaller iPhone

The New York Times has poured cold water on a rumor that Apple is preparing to sell a smaller version of the iPhone. The report conflicts with stories published earlier this week by Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal, who both claim that Apple is making a smaller iPhone that relies heavily on cloud-based storage and [...]

Huawei IDEOS X3 hands-on (video)

Yesterday at MWC we got our hands on the Huawei IDEOS X3, an Android 2.3 phone slotted right between the IDEOS / Comet we reviewed recently and the X5 we saw at CES. While the original IDEOS took Android significantly downmarket, and the X5 is looking to bring high-end features to the mid-end, the X3 is aimed squarely at bread-and-butter devices like the LG Optimus T. Spec-wise, you'll find a 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen, Qualcomm MSM7227 CPU (likely 600 MHz), 256MB of RAM, 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera, front-facing camera, WiFi b / g / n, and dualband HSPA plus quadband EDGE radios, all powered by a 1200mAh battery. Contrary to its siblings, the X3 is not a Google Experience device, and runs a custom skin on top of Gingerbread. See our pictures in the gallery below and jump the break for our first impressions and hands-on video.

Is the Shade Coming Down on the Windows Era?

If the human brain can be compared to a search engine, it seems fair to say that most of us tend to scan the news each day for search terms and phrases that support our existing point of view. That, indeed, could explain why a recent post over at the Linux Foundation has drawn so much attention on the Linux blogs. "HP to Put Linux in Printers and PCs: It's the End of an Era for Windows" was the title of Executive Director Jim Zemlin's post.

Google begins to enable two-factor authentication across all accounts

If you enjoy the unbeatable security of two-factor authentication, you're in luck: Google has now begun rolling it out to every user. Check your Account Management page to see if you can turn it on -- and, to be brutally honest, once the roll out completes, every single one of us should use it.

Two-factor authentication uses your password and another proof of identity -- which in this case is an app called Google Authenticator, which runs on your smartphone. Every time you log in, you need to run the app and input the code it generates. The code is only good for a few seconds, which makes it very secure indeed.

Of course, if you lose your phone things can be a little tricky. Don't worry, though: the setup wizard lets you add a backup phone to your account, and generates some backup codes that you can use in a pinch.

Really, if you store any kind of sensitive data on your Google account (even your search history!), you should use two-factor authentication. It makes hacking your account almost impossible -- and in a world where your login credentials are synonymous with your real identity, that can only be a good thing.
