Foursquare tries out an NFC-based check-in system at its HQ

There's not exactly a lot of details on this one, but Business Insider discovered something of a surprise while touring Foursquare's New York headquarters for launch of Foursquare 3.0. It turns out that the company is already testing out an NFC-based check-in system at its HQ, which lets those with a suitable phone (such as a Nexus S) share their location simply by tapping it against a blue dot on the wall. Unfortunately, there's no indications on any plans to actually expand it beyond its own HQ, although you can bet that it's pretty high up on the list of inevitable things or the company.

iOS 4.3 to be released today, and will allow up to five Personal Hotspot connections?

Rather than waiting until March 11 and the release of iPad 2, it looks like iOS 4.3 might be made available at 10am Pacific Time today according to BGR's sources.

The Golden Master was released only five days ago, but if no hard blocking bugs were found by Apple's slew of slavering developers, an early release isn't unusual -- and the sooner Apple gets iOS 4.3 into the hands of millions of consumers, the sooner any remaining bugs will be uncovered.

In other news, BGR is also reporting that the Personal Hotspot feature will allow five devices to share your device's 3G connection via Wi-Fi. The number of devices can still be reduced by the carrier, however -- if AT&T or Verizon (or Vodafone, or Orange...) want a maximum of three devices sharing a connection, then that's all you'll get.

Presumably, jailbreaking will re-open any carrier-closed slots, however.

Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"

wordswithfriends
As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games - this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.

How's the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

Search Your Cloud From Your Browser: Greplin Adds a Chrome Extension

In February, we covered the social search service's public launch and, mere days later, wrote about its closing a $4 million venture round backed by Sequoia. Since then, Greplin has been rapidly expanding the social applications it can search and index, adding Yammer, Highrise, and Google Contacts last month to its already healthy set of networks and services. On top of these, you can authorize it to search Dropbox, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Evernote, Box.net, Basecamp, and Google Voice. With a single search query, sha-bang!, Greplin can search nearly your entire personal cloud for that address, contact, or invitation you just can't seem to find.

Sony readying NGP for November 11th European release?

Sony's Jack Tretton told us the company intended to launch the Next Generation Portable in "at least one territory" by the end of 2011, and now we might know which one -- MCVUK reports that the quad-core, OLED-equipped handheld may arrive in Europe first, and on November 11th specifically. While it's probably a little too early to drop the hammer on a specific date -- even one as rhetorically pleasing as 11/11/11 -- the publication's anonymous sources say that "development deadlines have been set to ensure key Western releases are finished before the end of the summer for deployment in the autumn." Plenty of time to drop euros in your piggy bank.

Mozilla releases first stable version of Open Web Apps

Mozilla's Open Web App Store
The open and free alternative to the Chrome-specific Web Store is now almost upon us! Developers, feast your eyes on the first milestone release of Mozilla's Web Application project.

Developers, this milestone release means that the OWA Application Manifest spec is now stable -- so you can now safely begin building apps. There is also a stable JavaScript API that you can use to interact with the browser (installing, uninstalling, etc.) There's also the beginnings of a tutorial that you can use to get started.

For the end-users, you can actually try out some Open Web Apps now! You need to install an add-on first (Firefox / Chrome), and then simply head over Mozilla's Demo Apps.

Open Web Apps will be compatible with every platform and OS -- including Chrome! -- and they can be distributed in a variety of ways, too. Mozilla will undoubtedly run its own Web Store alongside AMO, but the Open Web App spec allows for developers to run their own store, or to simply distribute Web apps on their own, without the need for a store.

There's a video introducing Open Web Apps after the break.
