Thu, 17 Mar 2011 06:29:41 -0700 Samsung serves up Series 2, Series 4, and Series 6 laptops for serious, professional types http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/samsung-serves-up-series-2-series-4-and-serie-0 http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/samsung-serves-up-series-2-series-4-and-serie-0 Okay, so Samsung's newest business laptops may not be as slim or light as their Series 9 brother, but they actually don't look half bad. First up is the Series 2, and as you may expect, the 12.5- and 14-inch systems are the most budget ones of the bunch. We don't have a price on the duo, but the smaller version packs an Intel Celeron processor while the 14-incher kicks it up to a Sandy Bridge Core i3 CPU. Sadly, we don't have details on the exact configurations either, but they will be available with up to 4GB of RAM and 320GB hard drives. Jumping on up, the Series 4 keeps the same 12.5- and 14-inch chassis options, but provides new Sandy Bridge Core i3, i5, and i7 processor options as well as 7,200RPM hard drives and six-cell batteries.

Last but not least is the Series 6, which tops off the chain with some higher-end specs. Unlike the other two lines, the 6 comes with 14- and 15.6-inch SuperBright 300-nit displays -- there's also a 1600 x 900 resolution option on these, while the others keep it at the standard 1366 x 768. The Series 6 is also available with your choice of Core 2011 processors (i3, i5, and i7 all available) and finally jacks up the graphics power with an NVIDIA NVS 4200M GPU. All three systems are said to be made of "super-hard external casing," have metal hinges, and pack 1.3 megapixel webcams. We don't have any pricing details, but the 2 and 4 will be available in April and the Series 6 in May. Check out the pictures below or sneak past the break for more details.

One way or another, that's what many of the most promising start-ups and services are providing. It's not so good for the middle man, of course, but some are more secure in their jobs than others. Taking advantage of the long tail and stocking or listing every item on earth is something Amazon will likely be doing for some time. But what about, say, a predatory business like GameStop, which is essentially a clearing-house for other people's used property? It is, as we might say at one of our conferences, a prime target for disruption. Gamestaq is a service that allows gamers to sell their used games directly to other gamers, for an automatically-generated standard price based on eBay and Amazon listings — so you know you're not getting ripped off, though of course it's also impossible to find a bargain. It's intended to combine the best DNA from Craigslist and GameStop, and operate as transparently as possible. (link fixed - nice one, WordPress!)

Wed, 16 Mar 2011 18:29:30 -0700 Samsung's QWERTY flip Smart TV remote is official along with new TV apps and Megamind Blu-ray 3D pack-in (updated: hands-on!) http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/samsungs-qwerty-flip-smart-tv-remote-is-offic http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/samsungs-qwerty-flip-smart-tv-remote-is-offic Samsung's 2011 product showcase is underway in New York City and while most of these products we got a peek at during CES, it's only finally ready to show off the new QWERTY flip remote for its smart TVs. The QWERTY TV remote is looking a lot sleeker in its glamour shot than it did in the FCC tests weeks ago, and is available in the box with all D7000 and D8000 model HDTVs, or as an add-on compatible with the D6300 line and above (no mention of the Smart Touch remote or Google TV devices in the press release we received.) Samsung's also putting a lot of stock in its new lighter 3D glasses and officially announced the new 3D Starter Kit that includes two pairs along with a copy of Megamind and all the Shrek movies on Blu-ray 3D, along with prescription-ready models for kids and adults. Finally, an app market is nothing without apps, and there's two new ones to announce today with HBO GO making its debut on the TV and MTV Music Meter. Check the details (Update: now including MSRPs!) in the press release after the break and the gallery for a few pictures.

Updated: We got a few minutes to play around with the new QWERTY flip remote after Samsung's NYC press event today. It's not exactly the most glamorous handheld keyboard remote control out there with its monochrome screen, although we do like that the center of the D-pad can me morphed into a touch sensitive mouse-like control. Okay, so this thing isn't exactly ground breaking, but check out the shots below for a closer look.

While I'm not a huge sports fan, I can appreciate a good ad when I see one; and the Super Bowl sometimes feels like it's as much about the ads as it is about the sport.

YouTube Ad Blitz is an official YouTube channel going strong since 2007, with over 21 million channel views. It shows all Super Bowl commercials, uploaded instantly once they're broadcast in-game. Saw an ad you liked? Now you can watch it again! Better yet, the channel makes it super-easy to share ads with friends who missed them during the game.

A big part of the fun is being able to vote for your favorite commercials; it's actually an official contest, with rules written up by lawyers and all. The contest goes on until Feb 14th, and you can vote as you watch, using the thumbs up/thumbs down buttons on each video.

At any rate, contest or no contest, this is a beautiful showcase of the latest and greatest in advertising.

Wed, 16 Mar 2011 09:29:18 -0700 Publisher starts annual e-book licensing for libraries, attempts blood extraction from stone http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/publisher-starts-annual-e-book-licensing-for http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/publisher-starts-annual-e-book-licensing-for
Public libraries are en vogue again now that e-readers and e-books are so popular, and publishers are wary of the trend. To the dismay of many and the surprise of few, HarperCollins Publishers has set its e-books to expire after 26 rentals -- effectively giving them around a one-year shelf life (assuming 2 weeks per rental x 26 = 52 weeks). So now cash-strapped public libraries have to pony up license fees on an annual basis because the publisher is concerned that "selling e-books to libraries in perpetuity, if left unchanged, would undermine the emerging e-book ecosystem." In other words, HarperCollins thinks lending e-books is costing the company money it could make selling them. The publisher is the first to treat library e-books differently from hard copies, and the policy change has caused some librarians to stop purchasing HarperCollins e-books. Should the new licensing scheme become a trend, we shall see if libraries are forced to stop the electronic lending party.

[Thanks, Scott]

Tue, 15 Mar 2011 23:29:48 -0700 NVIDIA sends GeForce GTX 550 Ti into the $150 graphics card wars http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/nvidia-sends-geforce-gtx-550-ti-into-the-150 http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/nvidia-sends-geforce-gtx-550-ti-into-the-150
It wasn't that long ago that we were commending ATI on the stellar regularity of its product launches while NVIDIA was floundering, yet now the roles are reversed and we're seeing NVIDIA flesh out its second generation of Fermi products with the midrange GeForce GTX 550 Ti presented today. Its biggest attraction is a $150 price tag, but it makes a major concession in order to reach that pricing plateau -- there are only 192 CUDA cores inside it, equal to the previous-gen GTS 450, but less than the celebrated GTX 460. NVIDIA tries to ameliorate that shortage of parallel processing units by running the ones it has at an aggressive 1800MHz allied to a 900MHz graphics clock speed, and it also throws in a gigabyte of RAM running at an effective rate of 4GHz. That too is constrained somewhat, however, by a 192-bit interface, rather than the wider 256-bit affair on its bigger brother GTX 560 Ti. What all these specs boil down is some decent performance, but few recommendations from reviewers -- mostly due to the abundance of compelling alternatives at nearby price points. cueboyquest
Yes, that's right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren't always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight - the have arcing trajectories, so you don't always hit exactly where you aim.

There's another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they're large too. Simply beautiful!

Tue, 15 Mar 2011 17:29:19 -0700 Download every Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model photo from 1996 to 2011 http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/download-every-sports-illustrated-swimsuit-mo http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/download-every-sports-illustrated-swimsuit-mo If you're into buxom bikini-clad babes, the same ingenious script kiddie behind the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2010 and 2011 Perl script downloaders has released a tool to download every photo from 1996 through to 2011, totalling some 7,604 images, or around 15,208 breasts.

This new downloader began its life as a way to circumvent the security measures that Sports Illustrated introduced to prevent the 2011 Perl script downloader from working. SI.com obfuscated the URLs of its photos, breaking the 'dumb' Perl script which just iterated through sequentially-numbered images. The new downloader is more intelligent -- though the developer doesn't say exactly how the new downloader does things -- which will make it harder for for Sports Illustrated to block.

You will need a Windows machine to run the new downloader (or you could virtualize Windows under Linux or Mac), and the .NET 4 Framework (which you probably already have installed).

The downloader will take a while, especially if you want to download every photo from 1996 through to 2011 -- 4 hours, by the developer's reckoning. Having said that, it only took us about 20 minutes to download the 1,400 photos from 2011, so it probably depends on your Internet connection.

Note: the downloader kind of 'locks up' while it's running -- you can still see it downloading, but you can't minimize it or close it. Also, it 'counts up' as it discovers valid photo URLs before it starts downloading, so don't be alarmed if it takes a while for pretty photos to start appearing. If, for some reason, you want to stop the downloader, you have to kill the process via Task Manager.

It's no secret that Nokia's been casting an interested eye over the tablet market and now we have a bit of extra evidence to show its intent, courtesy of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The federal bureau has just published a design patent granted to the Finnish company for a tablet device, which was applied for on May 28th, 2010. Sadly, that date tells us what we're looking at is most probably a shelved MeeGo machine that never made it to market rather than an upcoming world conqueror, but still, here it is for all of us to gawk at and admire. Judging by the 3.5mm headphone jack outline -- which, like the rest of the dotted lines on the sketch, isn't covered by the patent -- we're likely looking at a 9- or 10-inch slate, whose design reminds us most acutely of Nokia's N8 phone. See more pics in the gallery below before returning to your mind cave to fantasize about what might have been... or might still be.

Update: Electronista notes that Nokia's filed for and received the rights to a second tablet design patent, this one eschewing the N8 inspiration for a more generic shape. See it pictured after the break or at the second link below.

[Thanks, Pradeep]

Tue, 15 Mar 2011 08:29:52 -0700 Is the iMovie on the iPad 2 Really Faster Than on a MacBook Pro? [Benchmarks] http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/is-the-imovie-on-the-ipad-2-really-faster-tha http://tinarriaga.posterous.com/is-the-imovie-on-the-ipad-2-really-faster-tha It's easy to assume a MacBook Pro would outgun an iPad in iMovie speed tests, due to its beefier processor and extra RAM. But AppAdvice found that both iPad models bested the MacBook Pro in multiple tests. What gives? More »

Berkeley Lab scientists create nanocrystal hydrogen storage matrix, could make for H2 batteries
If you could run your celly on hydrogen you'd have power for days and days -- but, you'd also need to lug around a high-pressure tank to store the stuff. That's no fun, and that's why we're still using Li-ion batteries and the like. But, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory look to have found a way to possibly ditch the tank, creating a gas-barrier polymer matrix out of polymethyl methacrylate, allowing the H2 gas in but keeping oxygen and everything else out. That matrix contains magnesium nanocrystals that react with the hydrogen to form MgH2, enabling safe, (relatively) low-pressure storage. The H2 can then be released again and the magnesium nanocrystals are freed to bond with another batch of H2 when refilled. It sounds a little like the Cella Energy hydrogen storage solution, but a bit more promising if we're honest. Now for the long, painful wait for this to come to production.
